Antibiotic resistance is among the most serious challenges facing modern medicine, and we are running out of new drugs. We study how Pseudomonas aeruginosa detects and responds to antibiotic exposure, especially antibiotics that target cell wall (peptidoglycan) synthesis, by making more biofilm and turning on production of a beta lactamase, AmpC. Using high throughput methods, we are searching for small molecules that can block this response in the presence of beta lactams.
