Anne Drumond Villela

Anne is studying how pilins from group IV strains of P. aeruginosa are modified with polymers of D-arabinofuranose. This glycan protects the pili from pilus-specific bacteriophages.

It is also chemically identical to components of the cell envelope of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Because of this similarity, Anne is working with the Xing lab (Pathology and Molecular Medicine) to test whether immunizing mice with group IV pilins will protect them against infection with M. tuberculosis, the most prevalent bacterial pathogen in the world.
